Top 3 Destinations in Africa for Wildlife Photography

If you’re thinking about what your next project should be, consider traveling to Africa. This is probably the best place to be if you want to learn more about rare species, observe wildlife, and participate in conservation efforts. Photographers who love nature and wildlife will surely gain a lot of insight and experience from traveling around the continent. Each country has something unique to offer.

Today, professional wildlife photographer Tatiana Kukanova will suggest three of the best destinations around Africa for a project on wildlife photography.

1.       Botswana’s Kalahari Desert

The Central Kalahari Game Reserves is home to many wildlife species, including critically endangered ones. Giraffes, white rhinos, elephants, buffalos, honey badgers, yellow mongooses, meerkats, and hyenas are some of the many animals that inhabit this desert. You’ll also see dwarf trees, scrub bushes, and golden grasses in the area. These plants surely make the perfect backdrop for your pictures.

The best months to take pictures are from April to October, and December to January.

2.       Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve

This reserve is best known for the Great Migration and an extraordinary number of predators inhabiting it. The Great Wildebeest Migration occurs once every year, sometime between July and October. Zebras, Gazelles, and Wildebeests move from the Serengeti to Maasai Mara. Many photographers and tourists wait for this spectacular opportunity. One of the rarest scenes anyone would be lucky enough to see is the Mara River Crossing.

3.       Namibia’s Etosha National Park

This park is in Southern Africa and is known to be home to over a hundred mammal species and over 300 bird species. Some of the most iconic animals inhabiting this park are the rhinos, zebras, wildebeests, elephants, and the antelopes. The vegetation in the area also varies widely. The best time to go would be some time between July and October. The dry season makes animals compete for and crowd water sources, making it easier to take pictures of them.

Be sure to see one of these places when you travel the continent.
