Why Asian elephants are unique?
There are
two major types of elephants in the world, the African and Asian elephant. Both
have distinct features that differentiate both of them from each other. The
African elephants are known to be more aggressive and dangerous than the Asian
ones. The environment and the type of habitat they are in is one factor they
differ from each other.
Why Asian
elephants are unique?
Most of the
elephants have tusks, but did you know those female Asian elephants don't have
tusks? And even some Asian male elephants don't have as well? Well, if you
don't, read on.
Female
Asian elephants either totally don't have tusks or have just simple tusks. Such
simple tusks are called 'tushes' in females. Also, not every single male
elephant have tusks; and some totally don't have it. A 90% of the male Asian
elephant population found in the southern part of India have tusks while about
5% of those found in Sri Lanka have tusks. Isn't it amazing? How do you imagine
an elephant without a tusk?
Aside from
the lack of tusks, Asian elephants are totally different from the African ones.
They are extremely sensitive and also tame creatures. These elephants can be
heard murmuring while bolstering as much as 10 miles away! Yes, they are
mammals and mammals supposedly talk with each other, so are they. Isn't it
wonderful?
Male Asian
elephants normally became sexually mature around 14 years of age. They are
called "bulls" by this time and experience something called 'musth'.
Their testosterone levels can be a hundred times higher than any other normal
male Asian elephants throughout the year.
Unlike
African elephants, these Asian ones are soft creatures. They usually hide or
flee in case of danger instead of attacking the humans around. Some good
examples of elephants that are so close to humans are those who inhabit in
Thailand and India where they became human friends.
